Day 1: Hanoi – Ba Be
We roll out early, around 7:30 AM, leaving the city behind as the morning light warms up Hanoi’s streets. Today’s ride takes us north toward Ba Be Lake, winding through the hills of Thai Nguyen province. As we slip away from the city’s noise, the roads open up, flanked by lush fields and small villages waking to the rhythm of the day.
We stop for lunch in Cho Chu town, enjoying a local meal that fuels us for the afternoon ride. From here, the journey transforms. Traffic thins, and the mountain vistas begin to unfold, with terraced rice fields stepping down the slopes and bamboo paddle wheels spinning gently in the rivers below.
By mid-afternoon, we arrive at Ba Be Lake, Vietnam’s largest natural lake, cradled within a landscape of limestone mountains and dense forests. We leave the bikes for a while, boarding a private boat to glide across the calm, emerald waters, feeling the breeze and the spray of the lake. If you’re in the mood, the cool, clear water is perfect for a refreshing swim after a day on the road.
As the sun dips lower, we settle into Pac Ngoi Village, where the Tay people live in stilt houses along the lake’s edge. Dinner is served family-style, with flavors unique to this region, and the evening is yours to wander, chat with your hosts, or simply listen to the gentle sounds of the lake as the stars appear.

Day 2: Ba Be – Meo Vac
Today is a long ride, but it promises to be one of the most memorable days of your Northern Vietnam motorbike journey. We leave the peaceful shores of Ba Be Lake and head deeper into the remote highlands, riding through ancient villages where time seems to stand still and the rhythms of daily life remain unchanged for generations.
Around midday, we stop for lunch in Bao Lac, recharging for the adventurous afternoon ahead. The ride toward Meo Vac is a highlight in itself, taking us along road DT217, a rugged trail that truly tests your skills and spirit. This path isn’t just a ride; it’s an experience—river crossings replace bridges, and muddy patches demand your focus and control. At times, you might need to dismount and walk your bike through streams or over rocky patches, but each challenge is rewarded with raw, untouched landscapes that will stay in your memory long after the ride is over.
We cross the Nho Que River on a bamboo raft ferry, drifting across the water with mountains towering around us, the breeze carrying the scent of fresh earth and forest.
As we approach the legendary Ma Pi Leng Pass, the mountains open up to reveal views that are nothing short of spectacular. The road winds along cliffs with the Nho Que River winding far below, and every turn offers another view worth pausing for.
We descend into Meo Vac, a Hmong village nestled at the foot of Ma Pi Leng. Here, you’ll settle into a local homestay, where the warmth of your hosts, a hearty dinner, and stories shared over “happy water” will be the perfect way to close out a day of adventure.

Day 3: Meo Vac – Ha Giang (The Ha Giang Loop)
Spoiler Alert: Today’s ride will take you along one of the most breathtaking motorcycle loops in all of Southeast Asia. It’s a journey that’s not for the faint of heart, but for those who dare, the rewards are beyond compare—sweeping bends, sky-high passes, and views that will etch themselves into your memory forever.
The day begins with the legendary Ma Pi Leng Pass, perched at around 1,500 meters above sea level, where the Nho Que River snakes its way through the deep gorge far below. It’s often called the King of Passes for a reason—though only about 20 kilometers long, every turn offers a new vantage point over dramatic cliffs and emerald valleys that stretch into the horizon.
As you descend, the road merges into Happiness Road, leading you to Dong Van, where we’ll pause for lunch. Here, time seems to slow down, allowing you to reflect on the sheer majesty of the landscapes you’ve conquered. The ride continues past ethnic minority villages, where women in vibrant traditional attire carry bundles of firewood, and children pause their games to wave as you pass by. Sometimes, the road itself disappears into clouds before reappearing along a rocky ridge, a reminder of how remote and special this place truly is.
The final leg toward Ha Giang City offers even more breathtaking vistas, with the sun casting shifting shadows across the rugged limestone peaks. The road winds through valleys and hugs the contours of the hills, with each turn revealing another panorama that begs to be photographed.
By late afternoon, you’ll arrive in Ha Giang, tired but buzzing from the day’s adventure, your phone overflowing with photos and videos capturing the ride. It’s time to kick off your boots and unwind with a cold beer beside the pool, soaking in the satisfaction of having tackled one of the most spectacular motorbike routes in Vietnam.

Day 4: Ha Giang – Hoang Su Phi
While Ha Giang has long held its place as a magnet for motorcycle adventurers, Hoang Su Phi remains a hidden gem, quietly tucked away and untouched by mass tourism. Today, you’ll get to ride into this secret corner of Northern Vietnam, where rugged beauty and ancient culture intertwine.
We start the day rolling out of Ha Giang, following Road 2 along the Lo River, a gentle warm-up with peaceful scenery for the first 20 kilometers to Thanh Thuy. Here, the adventure escalates as we leave the paved road behind, diving into an exhilarating 40-kilometer off-road ride through dense jungle trails. The path winds through thick forests, crossing streams and hugging the slopes of the Tay Con Linh mountain range. This section will test your skills while rewarding you with stunning jungle vistas and the crisp mountain air.
But it’s not just the thrill of the ride that makes today special. Hoang Su Phi is renowned for its centuries-old terraced rice fields, which cascade down the mountainsides in perfect harmony with the terrain. Their sheer beauty, particularly under shifting light and clouds, can easily steal your attention, offering photo opportunities at every turn.
As the day winds down, we’ll ride into Vinh Quang, the heart of Hoang Su Phi, where a cozy homestay awaits. Here, you can kick back, share stories of the day’s ride, and take in the quiet life of the mountains. It’s the perfect place to unwind and prepare for the next chapter of your Northern Vietnam motorbike adventure.

Day 5: Hoang Su Phi – Vu Linh
This morning, we say goodbye to the mystical mountains of Hoang Su Phi, leaving behind the land where “a bird must fly twice to break its wings,” as the locals poetically describe the rugged landscape.
The route today is not just a ride; it’s an experience in itself. We take DT177, winding 55 km toward Bac Quang, but these are no ordinary kilometers. The road meanders through fragrant pine forests, hugs mountainsides with a roaring river far below, and snakes through valleys where mist clings to treetops. With light traffic, this stretch allows you to truly savor the serenity of Northern Vietnam while feeling the cool mountain air on your face.
Arriving in Bac Quang around midday, we’ll refuel with a hearty lunch before continuing our journey south. The road transitions into a tranquil countryside route lined with towering palm trees, dotted with villages where life moves at a gentle pace. Every turn along the way offers glimpses of rice paddies and distant limestone hills, reminding you why this region is a dream for motorbike riders.
As the afternoon light softens, we reach Thac Ba Lake, Vietnam’s largest man-made lake, with its thousands of emerald islets rising from calm waters. We’ll pause here, taking a moment to swim or simply float, soaking in the lake’s quiet beauty before our day concludes.
Tonight, we’ll stay at a traditional Dao homestay in Vu Linh Village, where the warmth of our hosts makes up for the simplicity of the accommodations. Over dinner, with local dishes and a sip of “happy water,” you’ll find yourself reflecting on the winding roads you’ve conquered and the memories collected under the Northern sky.

Day 6: Vu Linh – Hanoi
There’s no rush this morning. Wake up gently to the sounds of the countryside—roosters calling, the distant laughter of children, the soft rustle of leaves in the breeze. Over a homemade breakfast of fresh pancakes, local bananas, and honey collected from nearby hives, you’ll share a few final smiles with your Dao hosts who have welcomed you like family.
It’s never easy to leave such warmth behind, but Hanoi awaits. We’ll ease back onto our bikes, taking the quiet, lesser-traveled roads, weaving through sleepy villages and along the edge of Thac Ba Lake for as long as possible before joining the main road. The ride is a patchwork of small tracks and open stretches, offering moments to wave at farmers tending their fields and to soak in the last glimpses of Northern Vietnam’s green countryside.
Stopping in Viet Tri for a relaxed lunch, we’ll savor one more local meal before pushing on. Choosing Road No2B, we’ll dodge the heavier traffic, gradually descending toward the Red River Delta. The landscape shifts as the mountains fade behind us, giving way to endless rice paddies and the rhythmic flow of daily life in the lowlands.
We’ve timed our ride to beat Hanoi’s infamous rush hour, ensuring you roll back into the city around 4 PM, safely and calmly, with the hum of the bike still in your veins. We’ll handle your bike return, and a comfortable car transfer will take you back to your hotel, leaving you to relax, reflect, and scroll through the hundreds of photos capturing your journey.
Your Northern Vietnam Motorbike Adventure may end today, but the stories, the roads, and the connections will remain with you long after the engines go silent.
