Often called the “hidden sister” of Sapa, Mai Chau offers similar charm but is much closer to Hanoi. On the way, we pass endless paddy fields punctuated by limestone karst mountains, weaving through small rural villages to catch glimpses of local life.
We stop for lunch in Hoa Binh Province, then conquer Thung Khe Pass, one of North Vietnam’s most stunning mountain passes. Here, you can enjoy panoramic views of valleys layered with rice terraces before descending into the peaceful Mai Chau valley.
In the evening, your dinner will be served with traditional Thai cuisine. You will be welcomed to a local music and dance performance, where you can join the villagers in dancing and tasting local rice wine (ruou can) around the fire.

After breakfast, we bid farewell to Mai Chau and ride towards Moc Chau, a highland town known for producing some of Vietnam’s finest tea and its pioneering dairy industry, supported by Australia since the late 1970s. We stop here for lunch and a coffee break, enjoying the cool climate and rolling green tea hills.
From Moc Chau, we take QL43 for around 10 km, then head north towards the Van Yen ferry, crossing the mighty Da River. Continuing northwards, we connect with QL37 and ride west towards Ta Xua Nature Reserve.

Today, you will ride through the heart of natural beauty, where the iconic Mu Cang Chai rice terraces showcase the ancient engineering skills of ethnic minority groups who have shaped these lands for centuries. These spectacular rice plantations are nestled along the slopes of the Hoang Lien Son mountain range, which forms part of the Eastern Himalayan chain.
We follow winding roads towards Tu Le, navigating the Northwest’s mountains with picturesque views at every turn, passing streams, wooden suspension bridges, and terraced valleys that seem to cascade down the hillsides.
From Tu Le, we ascend the majestic Khau Pha Pass, one of Vietnam’s four legendary passes, famously dubbed the “Horn of the Sky.” Standing atop Khau Pha, you will witness terraced rice fields stretching endlessly from mountaintops down to streams below, providing perfect spots for drone photography and GoPro shots.

After breakfast in Mu Cang Chai, we ride towards Than Uyen town (Lai Chau), tracing the base of the Fansipan Mountain range, the “Roof of Indochina.” For experienced riders seeking extra thrill, we can explore a challenging back route that includes multiple river crossings and off-road segments.
From Than Uyen, the impressive mountain ranges accompany us as we begin the thrilling ascent from Binh Lu up to O Quy Ho Pass. Standing at over 2,000 meters above sea level, O Quy Ho Pass, also known as “Heaven’s Gate,” offers panoramic views across the Hoang Lien Son range, with Fansipan’s jagged peak in the distance. We start with a descent from Sapa to Lao Cai town on a winding mountain road. Here, you can take a quick stop at Vietnam’s largest border gate with China before continuing along a narrow, smooth, twisting route hugging the border towards Bac Ha, a region known for its Hmong communities and vibrant markets.
After lunch in Bac Ha, we gear up for a rugged off-road adventure. Heading northeast, we connect with DT178, a notorious stretch featuring sharp bends, rocky paths, and river crossings. This trail will test your riding skills and stamina, with wild scenery and remote highland villages unfolding at every turn. A highlight includes the option to ride up to Kiou Leou Ti summit, offering spectacular panoramic views that will make you lose track of time.
We continue towards Ha Giang via Xin Man and Hoang Su Phi, riding narrow, winding roads lined with layered terraced rice fields and deep valleys, which appear like a masterpiece painted by nature and the local ethnic communities. Each mile challenges you with deep, wet mud, slippery rocks, and demanding technical sections, ensuring you earn every kilometer of today’s ride.

We then set off on a challenging yet incredibly scenic route, alternating between paved sections and rugged mountain roads weaving through limestone peaks, deep valleys, and timeless Hmong villages.
Expect countless photo stops along the route, with every turn revealing jaw-dropping karst landscapes, terraced rice fields, and traditional stilt houses. The ride allows you to witness the daily life of local ethnic groups living in isolated hamlets amidst the mountains.
A highlight of today is conquering the Ma Pi Leng Pass, often hailed as the King of Passes in Vietnam. At around 1,500 meters above sea level, the pass offers breathtaking views of the Nho Que River meandering like a jade ribbon through deep gorges below. Despite its relatively short length of 20 kilometers, the Ma Pi Leng Pass packs a serious punch for riders craving adrenaline and panoramic scenery.

Today’s ride is another highlight of your Northern Vietnam dirtbike adventure, testing your skills and rewarding you with raw, untouched scenery. We take the DT217, an unpredictable and rugged trail that requires riders to cross rivers by bamboo raft ferry and, at times, to dismount and carry the bike across flooded streams and muddy patches. These moments add an element of true adventure, making each kilometer earned even more meaningful.
After crossing the Nho Que River and riding down to Bao Lac, we take a lunch break in this mountain town before continuing on winding rural roads that meander through ancient Tay and Hmong villages, bamboo forests, and valleys of layered rice terraces.
Arriving at Ba Be Lake, we swap the bike for a short boat trip, drifting on emerald waters surrounded by limestone cliffs and lush jungle. Swimming in the tranquil freshwater is the perfect way to rejuvenate after a day of intense riding, allowing you to immerse yourself in the serenity of Ba Fully Be National Park, a unique freshwater karst lake ecosystem.
