After breakfast, we gear up and set out for the northeast, leaving Hanoi behind just as the morning rush begins to ease. The early hours see us weaving through the Red River Delta, where endless rice fields stretch out on both sides, gently blurring into a mirage as we push further into the countryside.
A few hours into the ride, limestone karsts begin to rise, signaling our approach to Lang Son. We’ll take a break to sip coffee and soak in the mountain air before exploring the town’s vibrant central market, historical relics, and the Huu Nghi Border Gate that connects Vietnam to China.
After lunch, it’s time to test your riding skills as we climb the winding roads up Mau Son Mountain. At the summit, the reward is a sweeping panorama of Northern Vietnam’s rugged mountains and forests, with glimpses of remote villages near the Chinese border at an elevation of 1,500 meters. We’ll linger here to enjoy the cool air, capture the golden sunset, and let the quietness of the mountains sink in before descending back to Lang Son.
As the evening sets in, we settle into our hotel in Lang Son City, ready to rest and recharge for the next chapter of your Northeast Vietnam Motorbike Expedition.

Day 2: Lang Son – Ban Gioc
After a hearty breakfast, we take a quick stroll through Dong Kinh Market, where the air buzzes with the chatter of traders and the scent of fresh produce. As a bustling trade hub near the China border, Lang Son’s markets overflow with everything from electronics and gadgets to colorful textiles and local specialties at bargain prices.
By mid-morning, we fire up our bikes, bidding farewell to Lang Son as we head north toward Quang Uyen, navigating through Dong Khe and That Khe. The ride today will test your focus, with sections of bumpy and dusty roads weaving through valleys and small ethnic villages, but each kilometer brings us closer to one of Vietnam’s most stunning natural treasures.
We stop for lunch in a village of the Nung An people, where you can savor delicious yet straightforward local dishes while taking in the slow pace of highland life. After lunch, the adventure continues as we ride deeper into the limestone karst landscapes, heading toward the breathtaking Ban Gioc Waterfall.
As we arrive, the thunderous roar of the falls greets us, echoing across the valley as water cascades down the cliffs that mark the border between Vietnam and China. It’s a place where nature feels raw and untamed, and spending the night at a cozy hotel near the falls means you’ll wake up to the misty spray and the soothing sounds of Ban Gioc at dawn—an experience that will stay with you long after the ride is over.

Day 3: Ban Gioc – Meo Vac
We greet the morning with a boat ride that brings us up close to the thunderous power of Ban Gioc Waterfall. Standing as one of Southeast Asia’s largest natural waterfalls, its mist rises with each crashing wave, catching the morning light and painting rainbows across the emerald valley. The sound is a deep, resonant roar that fills your chest—a reminder of nature’s sheer force and beauty.
After soaking in this unforgettable scene, we gear up and hit the trails, leaving behind the misty veil of Ban Gioc for the rugged roads ahead. The day promises off-road excitement as we navigate winding paths, cross streams, and pass through remote ethnic villages where life flows slowly in rhythm with the mountains.
By midday, we stop in Bao Lac for a local lunch, refueling both body and spirit before continuing toward Meo Vac. One of the highlights of the day awaits as we guide our bikes onto a bamboo raft ferry, gliding across the jade waters of the Nho Que River, surrounded by limestone cliffs that tower above, their shadows dancing on the water’s surface.
As we continue riding into the late afternoon, the road curves through valleys and past terraced hills, each bend revealing another postcard view of Northern Vietnam. As the sun dips low, we arrive in the Hmong village of Pa Vi near Meo Vac, where the air is cool and the sky bursts into color during sunset.
Tonight, you’ll experience the warmth of Hmong hospitality in a family-run homestay, sharing stories over a simple yet comforting meal as the cool mountain breeze drifts through the wooden stilt house. It’s a perfect end to a day of raw adventure and deep connection with Vietnam's hidden corners.

Day 4: Meo Vac – Ha Giang (The Ha Giang Loop)
Spoiler alert: Today’s ride takes you through what many call the most breathtaking motorbike loop in Northern Vietnam—perhaps even in all of Southeast Asia. It’s not a route for the faint of heart, but for those who dare, it rewards every twist and turn with views that etch themselves into your memory forever.
Gear up as we conquer the legendary Ma Pi Leng Pass, perched at around 1,500 meters above sea level, where the emerald ribbon of the Nho Que River winds gracefully below. Known as the “King of Passes,” Ma Pi Leng may stretch only 20 kilometers, but every meter feels like an epic in itself, with cliffs dropping dramatically beside you and jagged peaks rising into the clouds.
As we roll off the pass, we glide into Dong Van along the aptly named Happiness Road, hugging the mountainsides and weaving through ethnic villages where life unfolds in vivid colors. Women in bright, patterned dresses carry firewood along the roadside while children wave shyly before disappearing into the mist and hidden trails. We pause for lunch in Dong Van, taking time to breathe in the mountain air and soak in the highland calm.
In the afternoon, we push westward, and the landscape shifts, revealing new angles of limestone mountains and valleys carpeted in green. Each bend tempts you to stop for “just one more” photo as the golden light filters through the peaks.
By late afternoon, we roll into Ha Giang City, feeling the satisfying ache of an accomplished day. Tonight, you’ll kick back with a cold beer beside a pool, letting the stories of the day play back in your mind as the sun sets over the mountains—a well-earned reward after a day spent riding through some of Vietnam’s most awe-inspiring terrain.

Day 5: Ha Giang – Vu Linh
After breakfast, we wave goodbye to Ha Giang, the rugged land where mountains kiss the clouds and rivers carve deep into the valleys. The locals say this is “the land where a bird must break its wings to cross twice,” and as you ride away, it’s hard not to look back one last time.
The morning sees us gliding along Highway No. 2, a smoother stretch where you can loosen your grip, soak in the wind on your face, and let your mind wander to the moments you’ve lived on this journey so far. We reach Viet Quang around noon, where a simple, hearty lunch refuels us for the ride ahead.
The second half of the day unfolds on more minor roads, winding through rice paddies that sway gently in the breeze, past quiet villages where children wave from doorways and water buffalo lounge lazily in muddy fields. The pace slows, and you can feel the calm of the countryside embracing you, a welcome shift after days of conquering mountain passes.
As we arrive in Vu Linh, the vast, glassy expanse of Thac Ba Lake greets us, its calm waters reflecting the sky and scattered with countless green islands. We’ll take a boat trip to explore its hidden corners, with opportunities to dive in for a swim and let the cool water wash away the dust of the road.
Tonight, we’re welcomed into the warmth of a Dao family’s homestay. The scent of traditional dishes wafts from the kitchen, promising a dinner rich with local flavors, while cups of rice wine are raised in cheerful toasts. As laughter and stories flow, you’ll find the perfect end to another day of riding—deep in the heart of Northern Vietnam, under a sky littered with stars, with the gentle lapping of Thac Ba’s water nearby to lull you into a well-earned rest.

Day 6: Vu Linh – Hanoi
The final morning of your journey begins with the comforting aroma of fresh pancakes, sweet bananas, and local honey, all lovingly prepared by your Dao hosts. It’s a simple breakfast, but each bite is a reminder of the warmth and quiet hospitality you’ve felt in these northern highlands.
Before saying goodbye, we take our bikes for one last gentle ride through the tranquil lanes of the Dao village, weaving around palm-thatched stilt houses and along paths shaded by ancient trees. For those still hungry for adventure, a final off-road detour awaits—skirting the quiet edges of Thac Ba Lake, rolling through green tea fields, and catching glimpses of local life unfolding slowly in the morning mist.
By mid-morning, we begin our journey back towards Hanoi. Riding through Viet Tri, we pause for a lunch that’s both hearty and comforting, a chance to gather our stories and laughter from the road before returning to the city.
As we follow the Red River Dyke Road back to Hanoi, the landscape shifts once more, from the lush countryside to the steady hum of the city drawing closer. We glide into Hanoi before the evening rush hour, engines quieting as we roll into the familiar streets, marking the end of your six-day Northern Vietnam motorbike adventure.
There’s a special satisfaction in that last moment—dust on your boots, stories in your mind, and a sense that a part of these mountains, lakes, and winding roads now belongs to you. We’ll toast with a cold beer, smiling at the memories made and the friendships formed, until the next ride calls you back to Vietnam’s wild and beautiful roads.
